Why do women work longer and more, and get less men?
And, most likely, if you analyze the examples of your acquaintances engaged in some kind of labor by men and women, you will notice that the former usually receive more than the latter, which affects the cost of purchases that they and others are committing. Men buy cars and apartments for mortgages, that is, they invest or buy something that can be resold, and women more often buy goods that have a limited lifespan and do not bring them income. Of course, the times are changing and the reverse examples are becoming more and more every day, but the fundamental changes are still far away, especially since, according to statistics, women still work much more than men. But not everyone wants to believe in it, since the very concept of “work” in real life for men and women does not mean the same thing.
In September, the nonprofit organization ActionAid published an independent report, dedicated to the position of women in the labor market in different countries of the world, which is about to be presented to the UN, and according to the forecasts of the organization’s specialists, it turns out that the generation of women that is beginning its career now will work four years longer than men. Such a gap is not justified at all by different life expectancy (by the way, men retire later), but by summing up the hours of homework and raising children with hours of professional paid work. If no other country has yet come to the official wage for domestic labor, in Scandinavia they are already approaching taking into account the years of employment in the “housewife” status when indexing a pension, while other European countries are only doing regular polls to measure the number of time spent on domestic affairs and caring for children of men and women.
In a report by UN Women for 2015, experts estimate that when summing up paid and domestic work for women and men in developed countries, the gap reaches an average of 30 minutes, and in developing countries - 50 minutes. In other words, if your husband later comes home from work, and you - before, but the duty to cook dinner, load the washing machine and put the children to bed still lies with you, then consider that you are much more busy than he is (and in reality, as working friends with children confirm, even more than 50 minutes a day ), but only the work you do at home remains invisible to the economy, not falling under the very concept of “work” as a kind of non-commercialized work that is done with tenderness and love. It is a pity, only men to do something that does not burn too much ...
The report of the same UN Women ends with a forecast that is not too bright: considering that the level of women's access to education and life expectancy of women around the world will increase in the future, we will achieve conditional equality in the total hours of paid and “free” work only after 177 years .
That is, none of us with this progress under the conditional name “the man cleaned the entire apartment and prepared dinner, while the wife celebrated the purchase of a new car with her friends all Sunday” will not be seen live.
On average, in the world, the gap in the level of wages between men and women is 24%, and this figure does not seem so catastrophic until you begin to understand the details
Comparison of the level of wages is always calculated in the same profession: let's say, through comparison, how many the secretary and secretary, the head and the leader of projects of identical subjects, the cleaner and the cleaner receive. But in itself, inequality in work lies much deeper, namely in the way society distinguishes between "male" and "female" professions. Women do not choose to earn less, but since childhood they have less access to the so-called "male" professions that turn out to be more profitable. Female employment, especially in reproductive age, is considered to be an unreliable, temporary, influenced factors from outside ("I decided to devote myself to the family", "the child fell ill", "parents need care", etc.), flexible with respect to the schedule and so called "personal circumstances."
As a result, for all countries - both developed and developing - statistics converge in one: among workers in low-paid occupations women occupy the majority, and men almost completely occupy high posts and high-paying positions.Such a situation hurts pension guarantees: women more often than men sign temporary contracts without deductions and obligations, in the spirit of “did not like it - dismissed without regret,” while men again represent the majority among those who have indefinite employment contracts. And given that in our country the only breadwinner of the family in many cases remains the woman, such labor asymmetry does not lead to anything good.
And if in order to achieve equality in wages, you need to take measures at the state level and begin to equalize the opportunities of men and women already at the level of the first educational cycle, then with extra hours of homework you can do something literally tonight. For example, to decide with your partner that dinner and laundry is not “for love”, but also in order not to die of hunger in dirty clothes, therefore, it is possible and necessary to fulfill these duties equally.
