How to grow flower gazania on the site?

Daisies are beautiful and lovely wildflowers. But if you want to make your garden brighter, then use an exotic relative of daisies - an excellent gazania. With full care, it will bloom and please the eye.

Plant description

Gazania (gazania) or, as it is called otherwise, African daisy belongs to the Astrov family and is a distant exotic relative of the common field chamomile. Moreover, it is quite similar to its "sister", since it also has elongated delicate petals located around the core.

But the shades of flowers are brighter and more varied: from pink and lilac to yellow and bright orange. In addition, there are many multi-colored species, in the petals of which two shades are combined. And the contrasting tones look especially beautiful, making the perennials considered even more exotic and striking.

Gazania is represented by more than forty species, and such flowers in the wild are found in Australia and some South African countries. African camomile came to Europe in the seventeenth century. The name is named after the cleric Theodore von Gaza, who translated the writings of Aristotle and Theophrastus.

Growing up

How to grow a magnificent flower gazania in the garden? Immediately it should be noted that it will actively grow and develop in a fairly light and well-drained soil with an acidity level of about 5.5-6.5 pH. If, after storage, the soil has caked, loosen it thoroughly or even sift it. You can buy ready-made substrate or prepare it from equal parts of compost, turf and leaf lands, as well as peat. Mix all ingredients well and sift everything together so that the soil is saturated with oxygen.

Sowing seeds directly into the ground is not recommended, the most optimal method of cultivation is seedlings. In this case, you will be able to get the seedlings of the house, providing them with comfortable temperature conditions, and then get stronger shoots to relocate to a permanent place.

For planting, you can use the usual boxes or containers, as well as cassettes with cells in which the shoots will develop separately from each other. The best time for sowing is February or March, as the flowering begins rather late, and if you plant the seeds in the middle or late spring, you will see flowers only at the end of summer or early autumn.

If you use cassettes, simply distribute the seeds into the cells, slightly pressing them down to the soil and sprinkling them with a small amount of soil. Material should be sown in boxes in a staggered manner, keeping a distance of at least two to three centimeters.

Next, moisten the soil moderately by sprinkling out of a spray bottle. Place the container under the film and clean it in a fairly warm place with a temperature of at least 18 degrees. Open the foil daily to ventilate the soil and remove any condensation that has formed.

The first shoots usually appear after one or two weeks, and at this point the film is removed. Continue to moisten the soil regularly and moderately. When no less than four leaves are formed on each shoot, dive the shoots over individual small pots and place them in a cool room to prepare for growing in the ground. The optimum temperature is from 12 to 15-16 degrees.

Landing at a permanent place is carried out in late May or early June, when it is no longer cold at night. You should choose a well-lit place: Gazania is not afraid of even direct rays, but in the shadows they feel extremely uncomfortable.

It is advisable to protect the delicate petals from strong gusts of wind, so that the area can not be open on all sides and located on the dais. The distance between seedlings should be no less than 20-25 cm. And in order to preserve the plants until next year, you can deepen them into the soil directly into pots, which are removed and moved to a cool place in the fall.

Important information: young shoots diving and growing at home need a full daylight, so if the weather is far from sunny, then use artificial lighting. Also, to accelerate the growth of seedlings can be fertilized once every two weeks.

An interesting fact: gazanias are characterized by a rather long growing season, therefore, you can see the first full-blown buds only two or even three months after the first shoots.

How to care?

Caring for gazania involves the creation and maintenance of several conditions:

  • Lighting should be sufficient, because the flowers are very fond of sunlight and do not tolerate shading.
  • Water the plant infrequently and moderately: gatsania can endure drought, but over-wetting the soil is detrimental to it.
  • After watering, undoubtedly loosen the soil to ensure proper drainage and distribute moisture throughout all layers, as well as to prevent water stagnation.
  • Constant weeding is also needed to remove weeds that will prevent gazania from growing and blooming.
  • Immediately remove faded inflorescences so that they do not spoil the general look of the flowerbed, and also do not interfere with the tilting of new buds.
  • It is useful to mulch the soil, which in the heat will avoid premature evaporation of moisture, as well as slow the growth of weeds.
  • Regular feeding is necessary, and for them it is best to use complex mineral fertilizers. If the soil is poor, they are made quite often - every two weeks. If the soil is nutritious, it will be enough to feed gazania only once a month. On one square meter is applied about 20-25 grams of fertilizer.

Plant reproduction can be carried out by cutting method: the lateral ten-centimeter shoot is carefully cut off, and the cut is sprinkled with a growth stimulator. Next, the cutting is placed in the ground, moistened, covered with film and sent to a cool place.Rooting takes about one and a half months, after which it is possible to move the ghazan into an appropriately sized pot.

Possible difficulties

Some gardeners complain that gazania does not bloom. The reasons for the lack of flowering may be a lack of light, late movement into the soil, or waterlogging of the soil.

With proper care, the plant is practically not ill, but in adverse conditions, gray rot can strike gazania, which is removed by specialized preparations. Also, flowers are harmed by snails, aphids, spider mites. Pests are destroyed by insecticides.

Let the bright gazania decorate your garden! But for this, create comfortable conditions for her.
