Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated - Official Documentary
Demi Lovato Says She's "Living Well" With Bipolar Disorder
Five years ago, Demi Lovato couldn't figure out why she was feeling so bad. She was self-abusing, self-medicating, and dragging other people down around her. But after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she's spreading an inspiring message to help people get the help they need.
Demi is part of a new campaign called "Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health," run by a pharmaceutical company and five major mental health groups. She says that if more people were honest about their mental health, the stigma around illnesses like hers would finally fade away.
She says she hit "rock bottom" five years ago after fighting with a dancer on tour, and she quit and went to a treatment facility. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which she says was majorly relieving. "It helped me start to make sense of the harmful things I was doing to cope with what I was experiencing," she said on the campaign's website.
But now, Demi is keeping her mental health stable with a treatment plan, and she says she feels great. "I'm living well with my mental illness — I am actually functioning like a very happy person would," she toldPeople."I'm living my dream. Life is pretty amazing."
She's now taking action to help people like her get help.
