What is Christmas and how is it celebrated?
THE LORD OUR JESUS CHRIST, SAVIOR OF THE WORLD, was born from the Most Holy Virgin Mary in the reign of Emperor Augustus (Octavius) in the city of Bethlehem. Augustus ordered a nationwide census to be made in the whole of his empire, to which Palestine belonged then. The Jews had a custom to conduct national censuses by tribe, tribe and clan, each tribe and clan had its own specific cities, so the Most Holy Virgin and her righteous Joseph's husband, as descended from the family of David, had to go to Bethlehem (city of David) to contribute and their names in the list of Caesar's subjects. In Bethlehem, they have not found a single empty seat in city hotels. In a limestone cave intended for a stall, among hay and straw, scattered for food and bedding for cattle, among strangers, on a cold winter night - BOGOCHELEV, THE SAVIOR OF PEACE was born. The Blessed Virgin, who painlessly gave birth to him, herself, without any help, bound him and put him in a manger for sheep. That night before the Bethlehem shepherds guarding their flock, the Angel of the Lord appeared and spoke of the great joy, the birth of the Savior, and the shepherds first bowed to the angelic evangelism. At the same time, the wonderful star, having ascended in the East, announced to the wise men, the star-sorcerers of the Birth of the Savior of the World. Having gathered, the Magi set off to Bethlehem, and the wonderful star pointed the way. Entering the cave where the baby lay, the Magi bowed to him and laid gifts: gold, as well as incense: incense and myrrh.
THE CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY IS CONSIDERED IN THE CHURCH BY THE GREAT, WORLD AND HONORABLE, WHO SERVES THE BEGINNING AND BASIS FOR OTHER HOLIDAYS.
The pre-feast of the Nativity of Christ continues five days (from 2 to 6 January). The Festivity of the CHRISTMAS lasts six days and ends with the feast of the cut of the Lord. CHRISTMAS precedes the CHRISTMAS POST. This is the first of four annual posts established by the Church to prepare for the meeting of the great holidays: the Nativity of Christ, Easter, the holy First Apostles Peter and Paul, and the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos. It is also called Filippov fasting, since it begins the day after the celebration of the memory of the holy Apostle Philip (November 27).The fast lasts forty days, until the end of the Christmas Eve (January 6), and therefore it sometimes bears the name of the Fourtieth, but only small, in contrast to the Great Fourtieth - Great Lent. food. For severity, it is inferior to both the Great and Ouspensky posts. The church charter prescribes to observe the following abstinence rules these days: on Monday, Wednesday and Friday - dry food, that is, eating cooked food is not allowed, and I write can be taken once a day. On Tuesday and Thursday, an average degree of abstinence, the so-called permission of wine and oil, was appointed. The easiest degree of fasting was granted on Saturday and Sunday: permission for fish. The last days of the fast stand out for strictness, starting from January 2: the charter on these days prohibits eating fish, even on Saturday and Sunday, if they fall on this period of fasting. On January 6, the strictest fast is prescribed: abstaining from food during the day.
A week before Christmas, two-week New Year festivities were opened - BRIEFS.The first week of Christmas time was called SAINTS, and the second - SCARY evening. The people were engaged in fortune telling, carols, singing podoblyudnyh songs, dressed mummers.
Evening and night on the eve of the Day of CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS - it is an EYE, and it was also called the Kuteanik by the people, because it was supposed to be cooked with kutia.
Dinner on Christmas Eve was given great importance. The hut was carefully cleaned, the table was covered with a clean tablecloth, eaten in solemn and strict silence, while the peasants forced the children to climb under the table and “chuck” chicken there so that the chickens were well fed. The first pancake on Christmas Eve - the sheep. During the night, cattle are fed abundantly.
During Christmas, fires were burned on the doors, believing that the departed parents were coming to warm themselves and that from this fire the wheat would give birth to an ardent one.
